LIFE CYCLE SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT

Background: Task 36 is the successor to Task 30 - Global Hydrogen Systems Analysis (2010-2014), the first IEA HIA analysis task.
 
Goal: To facilitate decision-making in the hydrogen energy sector by providing a robust and comprehensive methodological framework for the sustainability assessment of hydrogen energy systems.
 
Purpose and Objectives: 
  • To promote collaborative hydrogen research and information exchange among member countries.
  • To carry out a review of life-cycle studies on hydrogen energy.
  • To address the issue of direct and indirect land use change in LCA of biohydrogen energy systems.
  • To compare capital and production costs of different hydrogen production pathways, identifying opportunities to improve economic efficiencies and optimal pathways in different national contexts.
  • To develop a Life Cycle Costing (LCC) framework for evaluating the economic performance of hydrogen energy systems.
  • To provide a robust set of social indicators for Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) of hydrogen energy systems.
  • To integrate sustainability indicators into a common methodological Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) framework for evaluating hydrogen energy systems.
  • To apply the methodological framework to key hydrogen case studies.

Subtask A: Addressing environmental challenges in LCA of hydrogen energy systems - Subtask Leader IMDEA Energy (Spain)
  • Review of LCA studies on hydrogen energy. 
  • Discussion on the suitability of attributional and consequential life-cycle approaches for the environmental assessment of hydrogen energy systems.
  • Identification of the main sources of uncertainty: data availability and quality, system’s boundaries, capital goods, assumptions, etc.
  • Recommendations on functional unit, impact assessment method, etc.
  • Consideration of direct and indirect land use change.
  • Final report within 24 months. It will provide well-defined guidelines for the environmental evaluation of hydrogen energy systems from a life-cycle perspective.
 
Subtask B: Economic analysis of hydrogen energy systems - Leadership: Forschungszentrum Juelich (Germany)
  • Literature review.
  • Identification of energy carriers and conversion technologies.
  • Harmonization of assumptions and data.
  • Data collection and database structure.
  • Cost evaluation and comparative analysis.
  • Inclusion of economic life-cycle indicators (net present value, internal rate of return, payback period, levelized cost, etc.).
  • Definition of LCC framework.
  • Economic database enhancing current advances attained in Task 30 Subtask B + LCC framework for the economic evaluation of hydrogen energy systems. Final report within 30 months.
 
Subtask C: Social indicators for the assessment of hydrogen energy systems and integrative approaches for LCSA
  • Literature review of social indicators and databases.
  • Screening of social indicators for hydrogen energy systems.
  • Development of SLCA framework.
  • Integration of LCA, LCC and SLCA into a robust LCSA framework.
 
Subtask D: Collaboration with IEA HQ analyst
  • Setting a collaboration process between HIA Task 36 experts and IEA HQ analysts.
  • Internal discussion (Task 36 experts).
  • Information exchange and arrangement of annual meetings.
  • Contribution to IEA’s WEO and ETP (revision).
  • Coordination with HIA Secretariat to facilitate HIA-IEA collaboration.
